How to split the water bill using apartment meters

When a building has one main water meter and some apartments have their own meters, the fairest split charges each apartment for what it used. The rest of the bill still needs a clear rule.

Read the main meter

The main meter's consumption for the billing period is what the bill is based on. Record each apartment meter for the same period, in cubic metres (m³).

Apartments with a reading pay for their use

Each metered apartment pays its consumption's share of the main meter total. An apartment that used 30 m³ out of 100 m³ pays 30% of the bill.

Share the remainder

The part of the bill not covered by apartment readings, such as shared taps, leaks or apartments without a meter, is split between the apartments without a reading. Choose the basis for this remainder: equally or by ownership share.

Check readings before charging

One wrong reading moves cost onto other owners. Compare each reading with the previous month and review the preview before you issue dues.
